What is a master set, and how do you build one?

A master set is one copy of every card in a set, with each secret rare and each reverse holo. A complete set is the numbered cards alone. For the 151 set that is 165 cards against 360.

Where the money goes

A master set's cost is lopsided.

  • Commons, uncommons and their reverse holos cost cents each.
  • Standard ex cards cost a little more.
  • The special illustration rares and gold cards cost more than everything else put together.

The cheap way to build one

  1. Open some product first.A box or two fills most of the commons and uncommons, and it is the fun part.
  2. Stop opening early.Once new packs give mostly doubles, more packs cost more than the cards you need.
  3. Buy the gaps as single cards.Start with the cheap ones. Leave the dear ones until prices settle after release.
  4. Swap your doubles.Trade spares for cards you need. Our Trade Table prices both sides.

Storing a master set

  • One binder for the set, in card number order.
  • Side loading pockets, and a sleeve on anything of value.
  • Reverse holos sit beside their plain twin, or in a second binder.

Our storage guide has the rest.

Which set to pick

  • A set you like looking at. You will see it for months.
  • A set still in the shops. Its cards are at their cheapest.
  • A small set first. Many special sets have fewer cards than a main set.

Common questions

What is a master set in Pokémon?

One copy of every card in a set: each numbered card, each secret rare and each reverse holo. Some collectors include promo cards as well.

What is the difference between a complete set and a master set?

A complete set is the numbered cards, up to the set total. A master set adds the secret rares above that number, and a reverse holo of every card that has one.

How many cards are in a master set of 151?

360. The set has 207 cards with its secret rares, and 153 of them come as a reverse holo too.

How much does a master set cost?

It depends on the set's top cards. Commons cost cents, and a few art cards cost more than the rest put together. Price the five dearest cards before you start.

Is it cheaper to build a master set from packs or single cards?

Single cards, after an opening box or two. Packs fill the commons quickly, but the last rare cards take hundreds of packs to pull.
