Most gold Pokémon cards sold in bulk online are unofficial replicas, worth a few dollars as ornaments and nothing to a collector. A small number of gold cards are official. Turn the card over first: a genuine paper card has the blue Pokémon back.
A real gold card passes all five.
| Kind | What it is | Worth |
|---|---|---|
| Replica gold cards | Gold colored metal or plastic cards, sold in packs of ten, fifty or a hundred. Not made or licensed by Pokémon. | About a few dollars for the lot. No collector value. |
| Official metal cards | Metal cards packed in a few collector boxes. The 2021 Celebrations Ultra Premium Collection had a metal Pikachu and a metal Charizard. The 2023 box for the 151 set had a metal Mew ex. | They came in boxes that cost more than $100. They sell as collectables. |
| Burger King gold plated cards | Six gold plated cards given out in 1999, each in a plastic Poké Ball with a certificate. Official, but made in large numbers. | Small sums. Many survive, and most are still in the ball. |
| Gold cards from booster packs | Real paper cards printed in gold, found as the rarest pulls in modern sets. Their card number is higher than the set's total. | From little to a great deal. It depends on the card. |
Real gold cards from a booster pack look like these.

Replica gold cards are worth a few dollars for a whole box. Official ones are worth more: the metal cards from collector boxes, and real gold cards pulled from booster packs.
Turn it over. A genuine paper card has the blue Pokémon back, a set symbol and a card number you can look up. A gold back, a metal feel or odd text means a replica.
Yes. Burger King gave out six gold plated cards in 1999, each in a plastic Poké Ball with a certificate. They are official, but so many were made that they sell for small sums.
Real ones can. Grading companies will not grade a replica as genuine. They send it back, and you still pay the postage.
Not with replicas or metal cards. They are a different thickness and weight, so they are marked cards. Real gold cards from booster packs are legal to play.
